In light of all the recent terrible goings on, I think it’s vitally important to remember that all is not lost. There are wonders and kindnesses out in the world…So,taking my cue from Ian Dury, here are my Reasons To Be Cheerful, Part 4…What are yours?

For lavender candles and fireflies in summer
For my favorite Stevies – both Ray Vaughn and Wonder
For Hopper’s Nighthawks and Van Gogh’s Starry Night
For avocados, blueberries and warm pecan pie

For the great weeping willow in our old backyard
For Arizona sunsets and campfires and stars
For Steinways and Gibsons, for Baldwins and Strats
For Renoir and Rembrandt and Magritte’s bowler hat

For the velvety touch of my labrador’s ears
For Top Chef and Lost and Hitchcock and Cheers
For Tobias Wolfe, Eudora Welty and Flannery O’Connor
To Rome and the fountain in Piazza Navonna

For pasta with pesto, for Mill River Farm
For Jersey tomatoes, for Dustin and Warren
For thunder and lilacs and the moon’s smile in the sky
And running with sparklers on the 4th of July

For Shakespeare, Jane Eyre and Dorothy Parker
For Orme and for Willie’s Red Headed Stranger
For Star Wars, chocolate bars and Joni’s Little Green
For Aretha and Ella, Elvis and Springsteen

And for that Angel who flies from Montgomery
And for Bonnie who brought the meaning home to me

For my cowriters all, thanks for sharing your spark
And for trusting me with your words and your hearts
For my wonderful friends who make music, who make magic
Taking me to places I could never imagine

For Frost, e.e. cummings for foamy cappucino
And to my wonderful life with my Italian named Dino
For my family, my friends and my two favorite kids
Having you in this world makes it a beautiful place to live.

Be kind to each other.  Love, S
